The Stone Diaries by Carol Shields is one of my favourite books. It delves deep into the lives of the characters without getting too tacky, and there's a part about some drunk's head being split open that I think you'd enjoy.
As for artists/albums/songs...I doubt you'd like my tastes in music. Kill the Poor by Dead Kennedys amuses me, as does Picture Book by The Kinks. And any kind of French jazz makes me happy.
